A race for the 2nd District Knoxville City Council seat appears to be shaping up.

Ken Knight, general manager of the Crowne Plaza who ran four years ago and has announced again in this year’s election, could face architect Duane Grieve and Tierney Bates, assistant director of development for the College of Engineering at the University of Tennessee.

Knight has completed the paperwork for his candidacy. Bates has picked up a petition but has not yet returned it to the Knox County Election Commission. Grieve is still exploring his candidacy, he said Saturday.

“I haven’t decided yet. I’m still talking to potential supporters,” Grieve said.

Incumbent Barbara Pelot is term-limited.

Knight lost to Pelot four years ago with 48.5 percent of the vote in the citywide general election. District candidates run by district in the primary and at large in the general election. Since 2005, Knight has been active in community organizations and attended many city and civic functions.

Grieve is widely known for his interest in preserving historic structures. His firm redesigned the Miller’s Building on Gay Street where KUB is located. His firm is located in Emory Place, an old city park reclaimed in the 1980s that he helped preserve. More recently, he has served as president of nonprofit Scenic Knoxville, which has been active in limiting electronic message centers throughout the community. To read more…
